House Rent Allowance (HRA) is one of the most common tax exemptions for salaried employees in India — but to claim it you need valid rent receipts. This guide covers what a receipt must show, when you need the landlord’s PAN, and how to claim.

What is HRA?
HRA is an allowance many employers pay as part of salary to cover rent. Part of it can be exempt from income tax if you actually pay rent, based on your salary, the rent paid, and your city. To support the claim, you submit rent receipts.
What a rent receipt must show
- The landlord’s name (and PAN where required).
- The tenant’s name.
- The rented property address.
- The rent amount and the period it covers.
- The date and mode of payment.
- The landlord’s signature.
The landlord PAN rule
If your annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000, you generally need to report the landlord’s PAN to claim HRA. If the landlord doesn’t have a PAN, a declaration is usually required. Keep this in mind when collecting receipts for the year.
How to claim HRA
Most employers ask for rent receipts — often for each quarter or for the full financial year — along with the rent agreement. Submit them during the investment-proof window your employer sets, or keep them with your records if you claim while filing your return.
Generate receipts in seconds
Use the free rent receipt generator to produce HRA-ready receipts — it writes the amount in words and lets you add the landlord’s PAN. For other payments you receive or make, the cash receipt generator works the same way.
