Web projects go wrong at the invoice stage for a reason that has nothing to do with money: scope. The client remembers agreeing to “a website”, you remember agreeing to five pages and two rounds of revisions, and the invoice is where those two memories meet. An invoice that references the milestone and the revision count settles it in a line.

The extra revision is its own line and says why it is chargeable. That framing turns an awkward conversation into a factual one, because the original terms are right there on the document.
What causes disputes on web projects
- No milestone reference. The client cannot tell what they are paying for at this point in the project.
- Scope creep billed without explanation. Reference the agreed inclusions and what exceeded them.
- Third-party costs mixed with your fee. Hosting and licences are pass-through; keeping them separate shows you are not marking them up.
- Handover terms unstated. If files, logins or ownership transfer on final payment, say so in writing before the last invoice, not after it.

Should I invoice web design by milestone or hourly?
Milestones suit fixed-scope builds because the client knows the total up front and you get paid through the project rather than at the end. Hourly suits open-ended or maintenance work. Whichever you use, name it on the invoice so the basis of the charge is never in question.
How do I bill for extra revisions?
List the extra round as its own line and reference how many were included in the original scope. Billing it silently inside a larger figure is what turns a reasonable charge into an argument about whether it was agreed.
When does the client own the website?
That depends on your contract, but many freelancers transfer files, accounts and ownership on receipt of final payment and state that on the invoice. Whatever your terms, put them in writing before the final invoice goes out rather than after the client asks for the logins.
