Money Receipt: What It Is and How to Make One Free

By FreeBillKit Team · July 19, 2026 · Updated July 30, 2026

A money receipt is a document confirming that money was received for a payment. It is the same thing as a cash or payment receipt, the term is common in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and it must show who paid, how much, the date, what for, and who received it. You can make one free in about a minute.

If someone has asked you for a “money receipt”, they want proof that a payment reached you. The name changes from place to place, money receipt, cash receipt, payment receipt, cash memo, but the job is identical: a written record that the money changed hands. The wording on the document matters far less than the details it carries.

Money receipt, cash receipt, payment receipt: same document

Across South Asia, “money receipt” is simply the everyday term for what elsewhere gets called a cash or payment receipt. Banks, landlords, shops and small businesses all use it. There is no separate legal format you are missing, if a form asks for a money receipt, a properly filled cash receipt is exactly what it means.

It is worth keeping one distinction straight, though: a money receipt proves a payment was received, while an invoice requests a payment. If you need the difference laid out, see invoice vs receipt.

What a money receipt must show

Whatever you call it, the receipt needs the same five details to count as proof:

  • Received from: the name of the person or business who paid.
  • Amount: in figures, and in words for larger sums (“โ‚น5,000, five thousand rupees”).
  • Date: when the money was received.
  • Purpose: what the payment was for: rent, an invoice number, goods supplied.
  • Received by: your name or business, with a signature.

A receipt number and a note of whether the amount is full or partial round it off. For the longer version of what keeps a receipt defensible, see what makes a valid cash receipt, and for the step-by-step, how to write a cash receipt.

How to make a money receipt free

You have three options. Write it by hand in a receipt book, which is valid but easy to smudge and hard to keep a clean copy of. Use a template and format it yourself. Or generate a money receipt online: fill in the fields, and it numbers, totals and lays everything out, then hands you a clean PDF to print or email. No signup, no watermark, and the numbers add up on their own.

For repeat use, a downloadable cash receipt template covers the same ground if you prefer to start from a document.

When you will need one

Rent paid in cash, a customer settling a bill, an advance against an order, a deposit returned, any time money moves without a bank record, a money receipt is what fills the gap. Give one copy to whoever paid and keep one yourself, and both sides have the same record if a question ever comes up.
