Grocery Store Receipt Template
A grocery store receipt lists each item bought with its price, separates taxable goods from tax exempt food, shows any coupons applied, and ends with the tender and change. Independent grocers, market stalls and farm shops use one when their till does not print a full itemised slip. You can make one free below with no signup.
Grocery receipts are more complicated than they look, and the reason is tax. In most US states unprepared food is exempt while household goods and hot food are not, so a single basket can contain items taxed three different ways.
What goes on a grocery receipt
- Store name, address, phone and store number
- Date, time, lane or till number and cashier
- Each item with its description and price
- Weight priced items shown as the weight, the rate and the resulting price
- A tax code against each line, so exempt food is distinguishable from taxable goods
- Coupons and multibuy discounts as their own negative lines
- Subtotal, then tax by rate rather than one combined figure
- Total, tender type, amount given and change
- Total savings, if you run promotions
- Loyalty number and points earned where you operate a scheme
- Return policy and the deadline
A small basket
Bananas, 2.14 lb at $0.69 per lb, $1.48, tax exempt. Whole milk, one gallon, $3.89, exempt. Chicken breast, 1.87 lb at $5.49 per lb, $10.27, exempt. Dish soap, $4.29, taxable. Paper towels, two at $6.49, $12.98, taxable, less a $2.00 coupon, $10.98. Subtotal $30.91. Taxable subtotal $15.27, tax at 6.5 percent, $0.99. Total $31.90, paid cash $40.00, change $8.10. Saved today $2.00.
Notice the tax is calculated on $15.27 rather than on the whole basket. Getting that wrong on a printed receipt is the sort of thing a customer notices and a state auditor notices harder.
Weight priced items and tax codes
Two things separate a grocery receipt from an ordinary sales receipt. The first is weight pricing: produce, meat and deli items need the weight and the per unit rate on the line, otherwise the customer cannot check the arithmetic. The second is the tax code, usually a single letter beside each line with a key at the bottom. Food exemption rules vary by state, and by whether an item counts as prepared. The code shows you applied those rules deliberately instead of taxing the whole basket at one rate.

Weighed items and tax codes both work in the receipt generator. Enter the basket and it totals the taxable lines on their own.

Frequently asked questions
Is food taxed on a grocery receipt?
It depends on the state and on the item. Many US states exempt unprepared groceries but tax household goods, hot food and prepared items. A receipt should show a tax code per line and calculate tax on the taxable subtotal only.
How should weighed items appear on a receipt?
Show the weight, the price per pound or kilo, and the resulting line total. Printing only the final figure leaves the customer unable to check that the scale and the price matched.
What are the letters next to items on a grocery receipt?
They are tax codes. Each letter maps to a tax treatment, such as exempt food or standard rate, with a key printed at the bottom of the receipt so the totals can be reconciled.
